This is going to take the effort of everybody, their mother, and their second cousin.
I’m working on the plans for an ultimate database for all videogame knowledge. I’ve seen wikia.com, which is highly detailed and caters to specific games, but no developers or anything else. Wikipedia has more widespread topics, but not as much detail. I want to mish-mash the two, and add even more topics that aren’t on either one. Games, developers, publishers, publications (online and print), individual journalists and their works, books, tools for development, consoles, peripherals, accessories, any known trivia or information about each topic, collectibles, toys, and lingo/jargon used in the game industry and among gamers (i.e., pwn, frag).
This will the a lot of effort and I would assume may touch in the hundreds of thousands of pages, but would serve as an ultimate database for anyone to find accurate information, and would be an invaluable resource for journalists.

We will be compiling a list of resources to allow journalists to maintain a structured, uniform system to help keep standards within our industry.
Journalists, bloggers, podcasters, and writing enthusiasts: I call you all out to leave comments with links to help make us a library of source material. We will slowly integrate this page into a full functioning encyclopedic highway.
Signed, Jesse

Crispy Gamer posted an editorial recently on the necessity of embargoes and if we really need them within our bounds, or if anyone should write when and what they want.
What is an Embargo? Crispy Gamer’s John Keefer explains the three types he’s seen:
1) A review cannot be posted until a specific date. Most of the time it is because that date is the day the game is released, but in some cases that date is because another site has an exclusive review.
2) A preview cannot be posted until a specific date. These tend to focus around events, such as E3 or the Tokyo Game Show, when writers get a sneak peek at what is being shown ahead of time and stories are embargoed until the start of the show or some other specified date.
3) A new game cannot be revealed until a specific date. This is sometimes tied to number 2, but can also be tied to an earnings call or a meeting with shareholders.
He then comments on the need for accuracy and standards within game journalism.
What do you guys think about this? Should journalists try to be accurate or first?

My name is Jesse Collins, and I’ll be your host this evening. To introduce myself, I am an up-and-coming game journalist, currently working under the legendary Bill “The Game Doctor” Kunkel. I write for many different sources and I’m ready to take it to the next level.
The IGJA is going to step it up soon. We hope to make this the ultimate spot for resources, news, and contacts for brainstorming and fine-tuning your journalistic abilities in the videogame industry. Check back often, as we will be bringing the IGJA back to where it should be and make it the best place to go for help or for feedback on ideas, topics, and articles.
So, welcome one and all. My name is Jesse and I’m a game journalist.

A few recent events highlight the trouble with schwag.
Dean Takahashi: Halo 3 press kit “nothing less than a bribe” - Xbox 360 News - QJ.NET
Microsoft has been sending out Halo 3 press packages worth US$ 800 to various gaming journalists. San Jose Mercury News game journalist Dean Takahashi, who received one of the packages, pointed out that this move was “nothing less than a bribe to try to get me to be favorably inclined to accepting the idea that Halo 3 is ‘the entertainment event of the year.’”
Meanwhile, a Kotoku reader asked a reasonable question after a write accepted a free ride on a plane to simulate zero gravity at an event promopting the new MMO Tabula Rasa:
Zero G Flight: Flight of Anti-Gravity - Kotaku
I’ve got an honest question: Is there a limit to the type of “swag” that you guys are allowed to accept before you feel that your opinions might be swayed as an organization?
The easy answer is that plane rides worth a reported $3500 or $800 bundles of stuff are obviously too much. But when is a gift small enough not to matter? $50? $5? Fifty cents?
One answer is that anything is too much. But that bounces up against the reality that purchasing review copies of games would most likely chill the interest in certain types of games (how many My Little Pony games get reviewed in the first place?). Besides, relationships with companies and press people probably do more to influence opinion and editorial direction more than any freebies.
Another answer from the other end of the spectrum is that anything is OK, as long as you are honest with the readers. But this ignores that at a certain point, you can’t even feign fairness if someone has flown you and your family off to a vacation to review some product.
So, is there a happy medium? Maybe not. But as the landscape of media and journalism shifts in the rush tide of new technology, revisiting the notion of ethics seems like something worth doing.
